The Sportsmanship Council is an effort to create a positive impact on the actions and attitudes of Buckeye fans before, during, and after sporting events, year-round. Athletics is perhaps the largest stage on which the university is viewed and can play a significant role of the national image of The Ohio State University. When disrespect, intolerance, and ignorance (just to name a few) are the most reoccurring images relating to OSU on game days, connotations and opinions are formed relating to the institution (whether true or false). Through changing the culture of sporting events and reestablishing respect and pride as lasting traditions for Buckeye athletics and its fans, positives images and opinions about “what it means to be a Buckeye” will be created. This will establish The Ohio State University as a leader in collegiate sportsmanship and an example to be modeled nation-wide. First started in the 1980s, the Sportsmanship Council’s objective was to promote sportsmanship and build excitement for athletic events. However, after a few years, the organization dissolved, once its goals were met. In the fall of 2005, the Sportsmanship Council was reorganized as a student-led initiative to help counteract the recent issues and problems facing sportsmanship and poor fan behavior. The council is comprised of representatives from student organizations, such as Undergraduate Student Government, Student-Alumni Council, Ohio Staters, Inc., Residence Hall Advisory Council, Public Relations Student Society of America, Association of Ohio State Class Honoraries, Block-O, Council of Graduate Students, Student-Athlete Advisory Board, Ohio Union Activities Board, as well as many others, Student Affairs, the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, Public Safety, Campus Partners, Athletics, and the Alumni Societies. This year, the council has identified main areas of concern and has formulated projects to help combat poor sportsmanship as well as build and promote Buckeye pride. Some of these projects include a Welcoming Committee on game days, Fan Behavior Video Series, and the “Best Fan in the Land” competition. These projects will be implemented with the help of the contributing student organizations during the academic year of 2007-2008. Along with creative marketing strategies, the Sportsmanship Council hopes to gain huge support and become an influential student organization on campus in the upcoming years, helping to prove that Ohio State supporters are indeed the “Best Fans in the Land.”
